Ingredients:

For the Vanilla Sponge Cake:

 

2 ¼ cups cake flour

 

1 tbsp cornstarch

 

2 tsp baking powder

 

½ tsp salt

 

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

 

2 cups granulated sugar

 

5 egg whites

 

2 tsp vanilla bean paste (or extract)

 

1 cup buttermilk

 

For the Swiss Meringue Buttercream:

 

5 egg whites

 

1 ½ cups sugar

 

1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened

 

1 tsp vanilla extract

 

Pinch of salt
