The mystery of dimples: where do these charming marks come from?

Those little indentations that appear on our cheeks when we smile have captivated people for generations. They’re often associated with tenderness, youth, and joy, but behind their apparent simplicity lies a fascinating combination of anatomy, genetic inheritance, and population variations. Far from being a mere aesthetic detail, dimples are the result of a particular muscular and cutaneous architecture that’s worth exploring in depth.

The explanation for these hollows begins with a specific facial muscle: the  zygomaticus major . Its usual function is to raise the corners of the lips when we smile, allowing that universal expression of joy. However, in some people, this muscle has a very particular structural variation: it divides into two independent fascicles or muscle bundles.

This bifurcation causes the skin to be pulled unevenly when the muscle contracts during a smile. The result is that small, visible depression on the cheek we call a dimple. It is, therefore, a congenital characteristic of the muscle tissue, not a defect or a medical condition.

The role of subcutaneous tissue

Muscle anatomy is n’t the only determining factor. The thickness of the fat layer under the skin also plays a crucial role in the visibility of the dimple. When the adipose tissue is thinner, the dimple is more pronounced. Conversely, in faces with fuller cheeks, the dimple may be less noticeable or even disappear completely. This explains why some people notice their dimples becoming more or less prominent depending on weight fluctuations throughout their lives.
