Unlike many other grazing animals, donkeys willingly eat plants that cows and sheep often avoid.
This makes them especially valuable in fire prevention.
They can also reach steep hillsides, rocky terrain, and densely vegetated areas where tractors, mowing equipment, and other machines have difficulty operating.
Each year, from March through November, the donkeys spend several hours each day clearing vegetation that might otherwise accumulate and increase fire risk.
Their work is carefully supported by the organization El Burrito Feliz, whose staff and volunteers care for the rescued animals throughout the season.
Because many of the grazing areas have no road access, volunteers even transport fresh water by wheelbarrow to ensure the animals remain healthy while working in remote locations.
The results have attracted widespread attention.
